The Ultimate Premier League XI: Goalkeepers
Here at Accumulator Tips, we’re obsessed with Premier League football and the greatest ever eleven is always debated in the office. It’s fair to say the Arsenal fans differ with the Chelsea fans, and the City fans are certainly throwing one or two names into the hat these days.
There are few fans around the world that would have the exact same eleven, with a wealth of talent to choose from since the division kicked off for the very first time in 1992.
That’s why we decided to put together a shortlist for our ultimate Premier League XI, which we’ll be unveiling ahead of the new season in just a few weeks time.
Of course, what better place to start than with the goalkeeper. So, who gets the number one jersey?
Peter Schmeichel
The number one for many, Peter Schmeichel certainly gets a place on the shortlist having enjoyed a stellar career in the Manchester United goal before moving on to Sporting Lisbon, Aston Villa and Manchester City.
He won five Premier League titles with the Red Devils, alongside three FA Cups, a League Cup and the Champions League in 1999. A huge and domineering presence between the sticks, there have been very few like him.
Petr Cech
Of the 2000s, you’d certainly be looking in the direction of Petr Cech as the standout performer. Similar to Schmeichel, he was the solid base to build a championship winning team from and for Chelsea he made almost 500 appearances in his 11 year spell, collecting 15 major honours with the club, as well as an FA Cup and two Community Shield trophies with Arsenal.
David Seaman
David Seaman made his professional debut in 1982, but that didn’t stop him from becoming a Premier League legend, playing in the division from its inaugural season right through to 2004 when he hung up his gloves at Manchester City.
It was at Arsenal where his legacy was secured, however. A key part of Arsene Wengers’ title winning sides during the 1990s and early 2000s, the man with the ponytail made some quite staggering saves during his career and will certainly go down as one of England’s greatest ever goalkeepers.
Edwin van der Sar
What is testament to Peter Schmeichel is that it took Manchester United six years to truly replace the iconic number one. And what is testament to Edwin van der Sar, is that the Dutch stopper managed to fill those boots.
van der Sar started his Premier League career at Fulham, following an already successful career in the Netherlands and Italy. Spending four seasons at Craven Cottage, a move to Old Trafford was eventually secured, where he contributed to another Alex Ferguson dynasty that included 11 major trophies.
Shay Given
Shay Given was long considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League during his spell in the division, which lasted almost 20 years. In total, Given played 451 Premier League games, eclipsed only by David James and Mark Schwarzer in the position.
Starting his career at Blackburn Rovers, he made a name for himself at Newcastle before joining Manchester City during the early stages of their rise to the top. Laying a solid platform for them to progress, Given lifted the FA Cup with the blue side of Manchester, before moving on to Aston Villa and then Stoke, where he called time on his career in 2017.
