3 Winners & Losers in English football from the weekend 18/08/17

In this gameweek, we found everything from antics at the Vitality Stadium to a brace from a full-back in a clash between two London giants. While our previous Winners and Losers articles and more can be found here, here are the winners and losers from the weekend:

Winners:

Marcos Alonso

Left-back, Marcos Alonso, celebrates scoring against Spurs

It’s not often a fullback bags himself a brace in a big match. Alonso scored twice as Chelsea beat London rivals Tottenham, 1-2 at Wembley. A perfectly executed free-kick gave Chelsea the lead. Late in the match he became the hero when he slotted a ball under Spurs goal keeper, Hugo Lloris, and celebrated the winner. The player seems to fit perfectly into Antonio Conte’s way of playing football, and will surely add to his two goals this season.

Conor Hourihane

After having struggled for a large part of the spring after signing from Barnsley in January the Irishman scored a hat-trick at home to Norwich. Hourihane finally gave Steve Bruce the first three points of the season having won none of the first three matches. He’s now top scorer in the Championship with four goals.

Sadio Mané

Ever since joining from Southampton, Sadio Mané has been a revelation for the Reds. His pace and awareness alongside his goal threat has made him into one of the stars in the Premier League. At home to Crystal Palace he was there at the right time and place, and saved Liverpool who had been struggling to score past Crystal Palace’s low-block. Has he surpassed Coutinho as their most important player?

Losers:

Brentford

Few have had more shots this season than Brentford. They’ve have 77 of them, but only managed to score five goals. This terrible conversion rate has guided them to the bottom of the table with only a single point after four matches. They’ve been dominant in majority of their matches, but have so far been unable to win. With an attacking force consisting of Lasse Vibe, Sergi Canos, Jota and Alan Judge going forward in front of an astute defence, we should see Brentford taking their chances and climbing closer to the top-half. It is without a doubt a very disappointing start to the campaign for the Bees, however.

Harry Arter

The moment when Harry Arther shouted at Nathaniel Chalobah to let the ball go

A highly irregular incident occurred at Vitality Stadium this weekend. Watford was attacking, and as Chelsea loanee Nathaniel Chalobah was about to strike from inside the penalty box, Harry Arter shouted behind him, luring him into thinking that there was another Watford player there to shoot, but as it turned out it was just Arter tricking him. An unsportmanslike conduct no doubt, but as karma had it’s way, Watford ended up winning the match 0-2.

Arsenal

After escaping an embarrassing loss in the opener against Leicester by turning it around in the last ten minutes, Arsenal struggled away to Stoke as they have so many times before. With only a single win in their last seven trips to the Bet365 Stadium it was no easy task to get all three points. PSG loanee, Jesé Rodriguez, scored the only goal of the match. Having collected three points thus far, the Gunners already see themselves trailing Man Utd at the top with three points. Not a good start to the season.
